Nations League: Dean Aston criticizes Southgate as England failed to beat Hungary

Former England striker, Dean Ashton, has criticized manager Gareth Southgate following his side’s UEFA Nations League 1-0 defeat to Hungary on Saturday evening.

Ashton believes Southgate got his substitutions wrong during his side’s Nations League defeat to Hungary at Puskás Aréna Park.

A second-half penalty from Dominik Szoboskzlai ensured Hungary defeated the Three Lions.

“When I saw Kalvin Phillips prepare to come on, I thought ‘this better work, because if not you are going to get pelters for this’,” Ashton was quoted by talkSPORT as saying.

“I’m staring at my screen at Tammy Abraham, I’m thinking you need a goal and you have got a striker who has been brilliant in Serie A.

“That would have been such a dig in the ribs for him, it hurts him in terms of his mentality.

“It wasn’t working from the start for England – that’s the biggest worry. It was like turning the clock back and watching the dross from England pre-Gareth Southgate.”

England’s next UEFA Nations League tie is against Germany on Tuesday.
