Gerrard makes Leeds man his No 1 target with double promise to test Radrizzani resolve

Kalvin Phillips Leeds purple kit

Aston Villa are reportedly ready to get serious in their efforts to prise Kalvin Phillips away from Leeds  – and are said to be planning an offer that will give the Whites plenty to ponder this summer.

The midfielder remains a man in demand despite a season wrecked by injury. Indeed, he last played for Leeds back on December 5, with a torn hamstring keeping him sidelined ever since. During that time, Leeds have struggled, as often they do, without him.

That said, Phillips was back on the bench at Molineux on Friday night to give the side a much-needed booster. That shot in the arm appeared to be failing as Leeds fell 2-0 down and suffered a succession of injuries.

But this Leeds side showed they are made of strong stuff and Jesse Marsch’s side dug deep and fought back to record one of the most dramatic wins of the season. Indeed, Luke Ayling’s injury-time winner sparked incredible celebrations, with Phillips running the length of the field to get in on the act.

No one should ever question his loyalty or his passion for Leeds United.

However, speculation over his future is rarely out of the news. As such, links to the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City are commonplace for the England man. On that subject, one leading agency has reportedly made a promise to Phillips over securing him a move to Anfield.

And recently, the name of Aston Villa was flung into the mix.

Steven Gerrard’s side are long-time admirers of the 26-year-old, having tried to sign him in 2019.

Villa to get serious for Kalvin Phillips

And with Villa backing Gerrard with serious funds this summer, The Times state they are preparing a ‘serious move’ for Phillips.

The paper claims Villa will go as high as £60m to land the man. That sort of offer is sure to give Leeds a serious headache.

Phillips’ deal runs until summer 2024 and so far, he is yet to agree a new deal.

Furthermore, they are willing to offer the player an ‘enormous salary’ to turn his head.

And while Leeds fans might scoff at Villa’s interest, the club’s owners – among the wealthiest in the Premier League – have big ambitions at Villa.

Leeds chairman Andrea Radrizzani has previously admitted his side may need to follow the ‘Leicester model’ and sell their top stars for inflated fees in order to help club grow.

Midfielder’s agent reveals future plans

Despite a plethora of interest in his client, Phillips’ agent, Kevin Sharp, claims the player wants to stay at Leeds.

With regards two January offers from West Ham, Sharp said The Sun: “Kalvin was pleased that Leeds turned those offers down.

“He has never asked to leave Leeds in all his time with the club. And he has no intention of doing that now or in the summer.

“But I understand the offer that was turned down would have been a record for both buying and selling clubs.

“So I would hope that Leeds would honour their promise of a new contract for him. This would then end any unsettling speculation about his future this summer.”
